In the Tarot deck, the High Priestess is card no. 2 in the major arcana, ruled by the Moon, the zodiac sign of Pisces, and symbolizes feminine wisdom. The archetype exists within all of us and can be more or less visible in our lives at different times.
Here we have Mary Magdalene or her real name before the Roman Empire demonised her – Miryam of the house of Magdaleana; The high priestess who worships Sin, the moon goddess. Mary Magdalene was a wealthy woman born into a high-ranking family, related to the unpopular king Herod Antipas. She had a solid education in, among other things, Torah, tantric sex, moon magic linked to two other High Priestesses; Isis and Inanna (Anunnaki who was nephew to Enki).
Behind her is a basket with pomegranates on it. They symbolize the sacred female fruit, wealth and the legend of Persephone who ate pomegranates in the Underworld. The High Priestess is a representative in flesh and blood of that which is hidden from the uninitiated. She has no karma and direct manifestation. She has a pillar on each side. They bear the letters B and J. B stands for Boaz which means “in his strength” and J stands for Jachin which means “he will strengthen”. She demands enormous respect and only those who are mature are allowed to enter the temple. The High Priestess does not differentiate between “dark” and “light”. For her, darkness is just another form of light. She has a completely pure Aura and all the Chakras are open and clean.
Depending entirely on which tarot cards are drawn around the High Priestess, the card communicates differently.
The High Priestess carries a gift. She is teaching us the higher knowledge about the fabric of reality, the illusion of time, that the end is actually the beginning, that everything is connected where one thing gives birth to the other, that the dream is real and the reality is the dream. The lessons here require a greater level of maturity. The high priestess says that something can be both one and two at the same time. When you understand the makeup of reality, you have received her gift.
This tarot card often comes up in my readings when more grace, more dignity is needed, that you actually know the answer but have gotten caught up in your thought-tangle, or that it’s time to take a time out, give yourself silence and privacy. She challenges you to mature, to wait into stillness, to become one with the cycles of the moon. It comes in everyday situations when someone is quiet and doesn’t want to talk, they are then close to the high priestess.
All cards have their gifts and they are here to help us become aware. We must become whole and free from inner conflicts. Not until we have accepted ourselves 100% have we mastered the lessons of life.
