In the classic Rider Waite Smith tarot deck, this tarot card shows a person in deep sorrow. Five of Cups is the saddest card in the entire Tarot deck. The person is dressed in black, hangs his head and stares fixedly at three overturned goblets of wine on the ground. Behind the person stand two goblets still upright. You are staring blindly at a loss and cannot see or appreciate what you actually have. One of the overturned cups has green content and sometimes it’s a blessing in disguise that we can’t consume everything we want – some consumption is poison to us. Sometimes life takes away from us that which had hurt us. The person has closed their heart and has a Heart Wall. It is as if the boredom in the card before, Four of Cups has gone even deeper and we all need to be aware that our thoughts can make us depressed. The person in the card also has a blocked Sacral Chakra (healthy emotions).
Depending entirely on which tarot cards are drawn around the Five of Cups, the card communicates differently.
This tarot card comes up in my layouts when you feel deep disappointment. Something did not turn out as you thought, wanted, expected and right now you are in the phase of just being in that feeling. Although everything looks hopeless, the situation is not as hopeless as it seems. Disappointment in this way often masks a reward / gift you cannot see. You want to be low, you want to be negative and in the worst case you want to drag others down to your level; “misery loves company”.
All cards have their gifts and they are here to help us become aware. We must become whole and free from inner conflicts. Not until we have accepted ourselves 100% have we mastered the lessons of life.
